After a few days of sleeping rough in nipa huts without electricity or water, our stay at Sea Cocoon Hotel in El Nido, Palawan felt like bliss.
Overall, the hotel was clean and modern with comfortable beds, hot showers, flushing toilets, strong air-conditioning & decent breakfast.
What more could you need?!
Sea Cocoon Hotel is centrally located in El Nido’s main town. The hotel is in the heart of the action, just a 10 minute walk from the harbour and around the corner from an ATM cash machine, a pharmacy and plenty of shops and restaurants.
Noise levels were high until past midnight. It’s something that can’t be controlled, but should be taken into account if you’re a light sleeper. On our first night we heard Adele playing into the night, as well as a few roosters! We got used to it, though.

Our rooms were spacious, clean, and very well-equipped.
We were given a three-bed room on the first night, and then were switched to a twin. Both rooms were almost identical, except for the balcony views. Thanks to nearby scaffolding and road works, some views were obstructed, but our first three-bed room overlooked the lively market square and two huge hills which were beautiful to see during sunrise and sunset.
Our second twin room balcony view overlooked the hotel pool and residential houses. Sunlight didn’t hit this side so well, so all our bikinis stayed damp and smelled vaguely cheesy even though we hung them outside all night!
The beds were very comfortable (more so after sleeping on rickety bamboo mats for a week straight!) with cushy pillows, comfortable duvets and extra blankets.
Bathrooms are very modern, with a double shower (fixed and hand-held) and reliable hot water. The water tasted and smelled a little bit funny (like boiled eggs) but this is normal as tap water cannot be consumed in El Nido. We brushed our teeth with bottled water.
UPDATE (June 2017):
Sea Cocoon Hotel now has a brand new deep well and the water that comes out of it is sweet (and no longer salty.)
Sea Cocoon’s breakfasts are included for free when you book a room. Although not particularly fancy, their breakfast buffet held a decent variety of food and drink. Hot foods included mini pancakes with maple syrup, sausages or beef, pork and beans, fried fish and rice (occasionally garlic rice). You also have the option to order eggs and dishes like eggs benedict a la carte. They served toast with a variety of condiments and cereal, plus tea and juice. Vegans and vegetarians would have plenty of things to choose from.
Services & Tours
Sea Cocoon’s hotel staff are some of the most courteous and efficient I’ve ever come across. The lobby staff particularly are very assertive and efficient. They organised our shuttles back to the airport, as well as private boats and tricycles within minutes of asking. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and welcoming.
Just a heads up – El Nido is very dusty. If you have dog allergies, best to double check with Sea Cocoon Hotel because the owner, Eric, has three beautiful, calm Chow Chow dogs (i.e. the local royalty) who laze about in the lobby and occasional say hi at breakfast.
Please note: Our stay at Sea Cocoon Hotel was fully sponsored, but all opinions are my own.
I’d like to give a huge thank you to Eric and the rest of the Sea Cocoon staff for giving us such an excellent stay. I am very happy to recommend this hotel to anyone looking for somewhere decent to stay in El Nido, as you get complete value for money, especially in comparison to other nearby hotels and lodgings, and the customer service is unparalleled.
Thanks, Sea Cocoon Hotel El Nido!
