Last week I woke up to a nomination for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award from Henar of Wanderwings. (Henar is a gorgeous, Snickerdoodle-loving, fellow Veronica Mars fan, in case you were wondering.) Thank you, Henar! This means the world to me!
The travel blogging community is crazy amazing. So inclusive, so friendly, so giving, and so positive. I’ve only been involved for a few months - weeks, even - and I still haven’t scratched the surface of networking, but already the amount of support shown by fellow bloggers has been phenomenal.
How does the #SotWAward work?
You’re nominated by a fellow blogger with 10 questions, you thank them, and then answer their questions given to you. After that, you then nominate up to 10 other sisterhood bloggers, send them the questions, and pay it forward!
- What do you love the most about blogging?
- What does “home” mean to you?
- What’s your favourite place on earth?
- If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
- What’s the weirdest dish you’ve ever eaten?
- Where’s your next trip to?
- Why did you decide to start blogging?
- Sum up life in a single sentence.
- You have 24 hours to spend £1 million. What do you do?
- Beach, desert, city, or snow?
My Answers (to Henar's Questions)
When did you start blogging? Why?
I’ve been blogging since 2005, when the internet gathered momentum and LiveJournal (“ElJay”) was the place to be. I used to blog about bands (Panic at the Disco. Cough). After that phase of my life trickled to a halt (although I met some incredible people through it who I still speak to today), I got immersed into the world of travelling and began pursuing writing as a career. After that I decided I was ready to blog again, to inspire, encourage, and help people out. Plus, the creativity involved in blogging is something that I absolutely adore.
What’s your favourite summer drink?
Basically anything involving chopped fruit and/or vegetables, whether or not there’s alcohol on it. Or actually, fresh coconut juice straight from the shell, with a spoon to scoop out the cool coconut meat after. Yep. Done! Fresh coconut water.
Turtles or Penguins? Why?
Are we talking about the chocolates/biscuits or the actual animals? If we’re talking about animals — sorry, reptiles and birds — then penguins! OBVIOUSLY PENGUINS. Because they’re adorable and I’ve always wanted to hug one.
What is your biggest (travel related) pet peeve?
I deeply detest the moisture-sucking ritual my facial skin goes through during a long-haul flight with recycled aircon! That, or having used clothes stink out my backpack after a few days on the road. That weird musty smell is grim.
Where does your blog name come from?
I wanted something to do with light and luminosity. And then something to call my own. I was thinking hmmm, illumination? No, taken, and too similar to a certain cult. Luminosity? I, Wanderess? Then after a while, illumelation was born!
If you were to blog about something else than what you already do, what would it be?
Book and film reviews. Love delving deeply into things and analysing them to death.
Three things you have learned from blogging/the blogging community.
- Networking is not only incredibly fun, but brings phenomenal opportunities.
- The more you give, the more you receive!
- There are some amazingly talented people out there with massive hearts.
What is in your 2015 travel list?
Iceland. For sure, Iceland. Perhaps Brazil! Definitely need to save up some money, ha!
If you could learn one new language, which one would it be?
Portuguese! Or Japanese.
Are you a morning or a night person?
It really depends, but I'll go with morning. I'm always super productive in the morning :)
Thank you again, Henar, for the nomination. I owe you a box of snickerdoodles! Ladies/Sisters, I'm looking forward to your answers! Also, if we're not following each other on social media yet... Let's do it!
